Mary + Matthias Sobocan
Mary Sobocan
I have been involved with the Slovenian community for a very long time. I was the first women to run the kitchen for Folklorama. I did shopping every day with my husband Matt since I did not drive and had 2 small children. I worked at the pavilion from 9am-12 midnight then washed the tea towels when I got home. We had no clothes dryer so we always hoped it would not rain overnight. I ran the kitchen many times after that first year and also managed the kitchen and assisted in the kitchen countless number of times. For Folklorama, I also taught dancing, was an ambassador for the pavilion, had the position of VIP media chair for many years.
I have volunteered at the Slovenian picnic grounds over the years.
I started the Ladies Auxiliary which eventually merged to the Catholic Women’s League and held the position of both president and vise president for many years. The CWL has been blessing in our parish and the group has accomplished a lot of things.
I have been a member of the church council and also n the church committee for remodeling Our Lady of Lourdes.
I had the honour of representing Our Lady of Lourdes on the synod at the Archdiocese of Winnipeg. I am a eucharistic minister and have assisted in managing the service readers and alter servers
Matthias (Matt) Sobocan
I assisted with the cleaning of the Our Lady of Lourdes church when it was purchased and also assisted with digging out the basement which is now our church hall. I have been a member of the church council. I have assisted in set-up and volunteered for many years at the Slovenian pavilion for Folklorama.
I assisted in building of the hall at the Slovenian picnic grounds, volunteered at events their and assisted in the annual picnic grounds cleanup. I volunteered for many community dances and we have hosted bands, singers, and dancers at our home throughout the years.
Lastly, I have supported my wife in all of the projects she got herself into. HA HA
